Authorized by Congress by Public Law 110-95, this medal was struck to honor Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. for his many outstanding contributions as a heart surgeon to the Nation. The medals are available in 3 inch and 1-1/2 inch bronze sizes. This medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented to Dr. DeBakey at a ceremony at the United States Capitol building on April 23, 2008.

The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Donna Weaver and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers, depicts Elizabeth Monroe at a reception marking the 1818 reopening of the White House after it had been burned during the War of 1812.
